Dominic Monaghan: Lost Hobbit

Dominic Monaghan received international attention for his work in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and he is following up that film success with a starring role on Lost, arguably the most talked about show on television. Monaghan portrays Charlie, a former rock star and drug addict who formed a close bond with fellow castaway Claire, only to have that relationship shattered when Claire discovered he returned to his drug abuse.

Monaghan says it will take more than a simple “I’m sorry” for Charlie to regain Claire’s trust. “He has to convince her he’s going to be clean and that he’s more motivated about taking care of her and the baby than he is about tripping out every so often,” he remarks. “I think she’s looking for someone a little more constant in her life. With that in mind, it will be a long process of rebuilding bridges.”

In a recent episode, Charlie resorted to a fake abduction of Claire’s baby to convince her to baptize the child. Although the baptism may have placed her baby on the path to spiritual salvation, it only drove Claire farther away from Charlie. “Charlie tried his best to save the child and get the child baptized,” Monaghan explains, “but he had to jump through the hoops that he did so that Claire would baptize the baby – in her own way. There was no way it was going to happen on its own. He had to back her into a corner to a certain extent. He was influential in making the baptism happen, but like most things in Charlie’s life, he goes about things the wrong way and then it all blows up in his face.”

‘Lost’ Stars Get Massive Salary Increase

The original cast members of award-winning hit TV show Lost have been offered a huge pay increase in exchange for extending their contracts by another year. Touchstone Television has promised the likes of Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly and DOMINIC MONAGHAN between $20,000 and $40,000 more per episode if they sign for a third series, pushing some salaries into the six figure bracket. Fox, who plays lead character Dr. Jack Sheppard, has reportedly earned a minimum $250,000 bonus on top of the salary hike. The raise puts Lost cast members in line with the stars of Desperate Housewives. Lost, which sees a group of plane crash survivors stranded on a tropical island, has one of the largest casts and production costs of any US drama series.

Monaghan Persuaded ‘Lost’ Bosses To Alter Character for Him

British actor Dominic Monaghan only won a role in hit show Lost after persuading TV bosses to transform his character from a 45-year-old has-been rocker into a confused young musician. Monaghan, 28, felt his part as Charlie would have more depth if he was younger and less experienced, and the switch allowed the actor to channel his own life into the part. He says, “Charlie was a 45-year-old rocker who had been spat out the other side – they were looking at someone like (the actor) John Hannah. My pitch was, ‘Wouldn’t it be a more interesting character if he was someone who has barely scratched the surface of what he could be?’ I had a lot of frustration and confusion about my career that I transplanted into Charlie.”

‘Lost’ Cast Members Have Odor Problems

Actor DOMINIC MONAGHAN has a huge problem working on the set of hit TV show Lost – all of his cast mates smell after a few weeks of shooting. The show features a host of characters who are stranded on a deserted tropical island after a plane crash, and have only the clothes they’re wearing. And the authentic nature of their look translates into unpleasant odors, according to the Lord Of The Rings star. He says, “Obviously, the characters have no real showering system on the island… I think I’ve only changed (clothing), like, three times on the island. We’re stinky, but we live with it. It’s part of the charm of the Lost cast. You bring visitors on set, and they’re very excited to see everyone – until they get within three or four feet. Then they realize we all stink.”

Monaghan’s Character Lures commited fans

A group of LOST fans have become so fixated with DOMINIC MONAGHAN’s rocker character CHARLIE PACE on the show, they’ve set up real-life fansites for his fictional band DRIVESHAFT.

Monaghan plays one of several characters stranded after a plane crash, and he’s stunned to learn that he’s managed to attract fans almost as committed as those who followed his hit LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy.

He says, “That’s the internet for you. It has a life of its own. It’s a world bigger than our world that we can’t control – kind of like the Matrix.”

But Monaghan does like the idea of making his fans happy by bringing the band to life, adding, “If it did (happen), I’d be heavily involved with it. I would be singing and doing backing vocals, and maybe I’d try to play some guitar or some bass or some piano.”

Lost souls who’ve found the winning formula

The world is Lost. The TV hit of the year commands 20 million viewers in the US and 2 million more in Australia. In less than a year it has beaten all comers, including this year’s other cultural juggernaut, Desperate Housewives, and is shown in 180 territories around the world.

From the first episode, in which Oceanic Airlines flight 815 from Sydney to Los Angeles crashed on a mysterious Pacific island, viewers have been spellbound by polar bears, unexpected twists and a still unseen “monster” in the jungle.

The internet is buzzing with theories: of a Dr Moreau-esque experiment, for example, or that the survivors are dead and the island is purgatory.

The Secrets of the ‘Lost’ Phenomenon

Take 48 plane crash survivors stranded on a very unusual island, add an angry polar bear, a seething love triangle or two, and an invisible monster and you’ve got a surprisingly effective recipe for a television drama that critics call “the next great cult-pop sensation” ? ABC’s new hit series, “Lost.”

“Lost” averages more than 15.5 million weekly viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. The show has spawned countless Web pages where millions of avid fans log on and obsess about the show’s secrets. Like: Where is this mysterious island? Some guess they’re trapped in the Bermuda Triangle. Another theory says they’re all dead and in purgatory.
