This season’s Others story line is creating a new population boom on Lost.
In tonight’s episode (ABC, 9 ET/PT), the series finally reconnects with established characters Locke (Terry O’Quinn), Charlie (Dominic Monaghan), Claire (Emilie de Ravin), Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Hurley (Jorge Garcia) and Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick), absent since May’s cliffhanger.
“We feel like Jay Leno, who has a garage full of fancy cars and can only drive one every day,” says executive producer Carlton Cuse. “We have a garage full of fancy, wonderful actors, and we just don’t have as much time to drive each one as much as we want to.”
The season’s first two episodes focused on The Others, including Ben (Michael Emerson) and newcomer Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell), and the crash survivors caught by or chasing them.
“The show demands we introduce new characters on a regular basis, and the new toy is always the one that’s very engaging to the audience,” executive producer Damon Lindelof explains.
“This year so far, the story that’s captivated us has been the captivity story,” Cuse says.
But even cast members who are the season’s early focus have concerns about overpopulation.
“I think The Others are going to take a lot of our time away,” says Yunjin Kim, who plays Sun and was left out of a lot of last year’s action, which focused on survivors from the plane’s tail section. “But we need new blood to get things going. That’s how Lost goes.”
Says Matthew Fox, who plays Jack, held captive by The Others: “There were characters last year that people felt weren’t developed enough. Now, all of a sudden we find ourselves into The Others with new people introduced there.”
The producers promise that all will get their due ? and that more characters will be introduced and others will return.
But is tracking the vast cast contributing to a viewership slide? (Last week’s episode drew 16.9 million viewers, compared with 21.7 million for the same week last year.) Cuse says no and attributes the dip instead to the plot’s complexities.
“Lost has a whole history behind it,” he says, “and some casual viewers think it’s daunting to come watch the show if you haven’t been. We tried to design the show this year to make the basic concept pretty simple: our characters vs. The Others.”
Dominic Monaghan (Lord of the Rings), is one of the first stars of the hit ABC show to begin openly complaining about the amount of air-time he and other stars are not getting on “LOST.”
Monaghan, who plays former rock star and heroin addict Charlie Pace, was quite prominent in the first two seasons of the show, but is now starting to feel like a step-child within the large ensemble cast for season three. “It’s tough being involved in a shoot with a large cast,” he told Bang Showbiz. “Just the sheer politics can drag you down…..[you’re now hearing squabblings such as] ‘So-and-so is not getting screen time. So-and-so is not showing up on time. So-and-so isn’t behaving well on set.’”
Normally, complaints like this from members of such a large ensemble cast would be ignored and treated like schoolyard bickering, but with a definite decline in the show’s popularity and strong showings from competing networks in that timeslot, execs at ABC might be wise to take some interest in this latest indication that Paradise may be, if not lost, perhaps not as rosey as it was. With show creator J.J. Abrams’ time now so actively divided between several TV and film projects, including the major production of STAR TREK: XI, can “LOST” recover? I wouldn’t count the show out just yet, as it is taking a whole new direction by concentrating a little more on those other mysterious and very interesting inhabitants of the island – The Others!
British favourite Naveen Andrews got into the spirit of things by wearing a garland of flowers over his printed shirt when he turned out for the beach-front event. And the mind-bending drama’s hunky leading men, Matthew Fox, who is better known as Dr Jack, and Josh Holloway, who fans will recognise as Sawyer, likewise seemed to be enjoying the attention as they rolled up to the exclusive bash.
Canadian bombshell Evangeline Lilly had swapped her character’s jeans and tank tops for an elegant floor-length gown, while the statuesque Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who generally goes shirtless in the programme, was looking rather more dapper in head-to-toe white linen. Australian actress Emilie de Ravin was likewise on hand for the soiree, along with Lord Of The Rings star Dominic Monaghan, who plays her onscreen admirer Charlie.
Each of the actors was welcomed by a loud cheer from the throng of fans when they made their entrance at the celebration, which was staged at Waikiki on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu, not far from where the series is filmed. “This doesn’t happen every day,” confessed Terry O’Quinn, who plays the shaven-headed Locke. “I’m not used to it. I’ve never been to a Hollywood premiere, but can’t imagine anything surpassing it.”
Dominic Monaghan is the charming actor who portrays Charlie Pace, the rock musician and former heroin addict, on NBC’s hit show Lost. Dominic Monaghan landed his first major role while still attending college, when he was cast as Geoffrey Shawcross, the lovable sidekick in the BBC mystery series Hetty Wainthrop Investigates. The fan base for this unique actor exploded when he appeared as Merry in The Lord Of The Rings film trilogy. Now that he’s managed a third hit with Lost, Dominic Monaghan is becoming a household name as both a heartthrob, and a major talent.
‘Lost’ star DOMINIC MONAGHAN says in-fighting on the set of the TV show gets him down.
The actor – who plays Charlie Pace – says he finds it hard when other actors don’t pull their weight or get on each others nerves. He fumed to Newsweek magazine: “It’s tough being involved in a shoot with a large cast.
“Just the sheer politics can drag you down. So-and-so is not getting screen time. So-and-so is not showing up on time. So-and-so isn’t behaving well on set.
“That’s the toughest thing-coming home and going, ‘Well, I behaved OK, but three or four people didn’t’.”
Meanwhile, co-star Evangeline Lilly says the tensions are exactly the same as you would get between members of a family.
“We’re like brothers and sisters but there are days when you want to thank them for being in your life, and there are days when you want to punch them in the face.”
Monsters and Critics
Could Lost couple Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lilly have some news for us?
If Dom’s talk of being broody is anything to go by, there may be a baby on the horizon.
The actor has said that he’s been desperate for a bub since he was 11 years old but didn’t mention whether Evangeline was in the family way or not.
And he’s pleased that his Lost character – drug addict Charlie – spends a lot of time taking care of his friend’s baby in the show.
He said: “I love kids. I love being around wild animals or babies because it’s a pure interaction there. They’re all about the moment… It’s fun.”
Dominic also had some speculative news for Lost fans.
He said: “I think my character could die. It’s the nature of the show, isn’t it?
“I’ve said to the writers a bunch of times, ‘If you’re sitting in the writing room and you create a fantastic death scene for Charlie… then I’m all for it.”
