Dominic Monaghan from Lost joins the cast of Flash Forward

At Comic-Con 2009 it was revealed that actor Dominic Monaghan, best known for his role as Charlie in Lost and as the hobbit Meriadoc, or Merry, in The Lord of the Rings movies, has joined the cast of the new sci-fi drama Flash Forward.

Just like his fellow Lost coworker Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet), who now stars in the remake of the alien invasion series V as Erica Evans, Dominic Monaghan will stay on the sci-fi genre with Flash Forward. And British actressSonya Walger, Penny in Lost, will join the fun in Flash Forward as well. Furthermore, all of them will continue working with ABC, network which besides Lost will also air both upcoming shows.

Obviously, being on Lost has absolutely no side effects on actors’ careers, especially when talking science fiction.

Also in the cast of Flash Forward are John Cho, from Star Trek, Joseph Fiennes, star of the movie Shakespeare in Love, and Courtney B. Vance from Law & Order. They will all be characters in a world where the entire population has a flash forward into their future six months of existence during two minutes of global unconsciousness.

Many are comparing Flash Forward to Lost. According to E! Online’s Watch with Kristin, Dominic Monaghan was asked whether Flash Forward is a “companion piece” to Lost and said that the new show has a “large impressive international cast [and is a] worldwide show, a world event, with mystery, drama and suspense, but ultimately tells the story through characters. So in that way it’s heavily influenced by Lost,” adding “But it’s also its own beast. I just kinda know what you guys know. A world event takes place for about two and a half minutes… Everyone becomes a prophet of their life. It’s just a huge headf–k.”

As an actor, Monaghan claims his motivations are to work on something completely different, and probably avoid typecasting. He says, “I want to play someone who’s the opposite of Charlie. [Simon, his character in Flash Forward] is a man -this guy’s not scared, he’s capable, he’s unflappable, he’s smart, he’s scary, he’s everything that Charlie wasn’t… I love Charlie -that was a time of my life. But it’s important to me to continue to show an audience that I can play more… if no one knows what I’m going to play next, it gives me more choices.”

As a person with a life, the actor might be getting tired of the constant, unanswerable questions about Lost. About that he says,”When people ask if me I’m coming back to Lost, that’s the equivalent of asking Huckleberry Finn if he’s coming back to Mark Twain,” adding “I’m a fictional character. I have no control over that.” Another thing over which he has no control is international fame: “That is the price I pay for doing the job I love. At some point in the future I’ll probably take a step back. Have babies and make honey.”
Flash Forward was created by David G. Goyer, whose credits include Batman Begins, and Brannon Braga, Star Trek and 24. Dominic Monaghan, Sonya Walger and the rest of the cast will hit the small screen at the show’s premiere on Thursday, September 24th at 8pm EST on ABC.
