Actor Goes Buggy

Shooting ABC’s new J.J. Abrams series “Lost” in Hawaii affords actor Dominic Monaghan a chance to do some of his favorite hobbies.

Surfing is one, says the German-born actor best known for his role as hobbit Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. “We didn’t get an awful lot of time off, but when we did, we were in the water in Waikiki, which is busy.”

Also, he got a black widow spider. “Which I think is illegal,” he says. “I’m a fan of bugs. I’m a fan of wild animals in general and had snakes and lizards when I was a kid and would go out and catch insects and bugs and become more interested in the insects and bugs. I do sound like a geek, don’t I?”

In Hawaii, Monaghan says “I have a spider, and I did have scorpions – but they died – cockroaches, praying mantis and a snake.”

In the new series by the creator of “Alias,” Monaghan plays one of several dozen people marooned on a Pacific island when their plane is torn apart in midair, according to www.abc.com. The network website says: “Stripped of everything, the 48 survivors scavenge what they can from the plane for their survival. Some panic. Some pin their hopes on rescue. A few find inner strength they never knew. … The band of friends, family, enemies and strangers must work together against the cruel weather and harsh terrain. But the intense howls of the mysterious creatures stalking the jungle fill them all with fear. …”

“Lost” has its premiere Sept. 22.
