With the release of the much anticipated movie, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”, we recently had the wonderful opportunity to speak with the man behind the hairy footed Hobbit, “Merry”, Dominic Monaghan, in “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy.
For those of you who do not know, Dominic Monaghan is sweet natured, kind hearted and has a darling smile with a boyish quality that makes you weak in the knees. Dominic may not think so, but he seems to have this strange effect on women, where you stop and say to yourself, “Uh, who am I? Was I really just talking to Dominic Monaghan?” After he leaves, you find yourself suddenly feeling very warm even though it’s 50 degrees outside. Trust me, I am not alone when it comes to these feelings. There are a lot of other girls/fans who feel the same.
Not only is Dominic charming and a lot of fun to be around, but he is also a talented actor who can portray a Hobbit in Middle-Earth, or a bass guitarist in a rock band, which is his newest project.
We were very fortunate to have had the chance to speak with Dominic and ask him a few questions about “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and his new projects. Thanks so much Dom for taking the time to talk with us and making us laugh! We wish you the best of everything! You’re the best.
Hello! Hi! [smiles] How are you?
Good, good. And you? Good.
Do you ever regret making ‘Lord of the Rings’ and losing your privacy? No because I don’t really feel like I’ve lost my privacy. I’m still doing the things I want to do. I still go out. I go to my gym. I really don’t get hasseled that much. I don’t think I look too much like my character that I play in ‘Lord of the Rings’. It’s gradually getting more and more, but I hide behind a lot of scruff. [smiles and touches his beard] I do my hair differently. Like, I have days where I go out and no one knows who I am because of the way I’m wearing my hair or the way I’ve got my hat. I have these little tricks.
How do you feel about teenage girls screaming your name? It’s okay. I’m really keen on breaking that myth down. People kind of put you on a pedastool. I mean, people are people. If anyone is ever freaking out when they meet me, I try and spend as much time with them. Kind of, ‘Hey how are you doing?’. Trying to push it back on to them instead of me. [thinks] It’s all a big game. It’s a myth…a dream. It doesn’t make any sense. [shrugs]
Out of the trilogy, which is your favorite scene? Wow! What’s my favorite scene out of the trilogy… [thinks] Um…let me get through nine hours of cinema. [thinks] There’s a scene in the third movie where…uhh…it’s hard to tell you, without spoiling it. Merry & Pippin have a kind of high emotion scene because they have not seen eachother for a while. That was kind of nice to film for Billy & I…hanging out everyday, then not seeing eachother for three months and then doing that scene. That would be my favorite. Either that or the scene with the wooden log and the Black Rider looks over. Then the Hobbits are hiding. That’s like the start of the adventure.
What can people expect from ‘Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’? It just gets bigger. Bigger battles. More jeopardy. Everyone looks like they are going to die. It’s really sad. Lots of new characters. It’s just a bigger movie. Mind blowing.
What was the most embarrassing thing for you on the set? Oh uh…[pauses for a moment, thinks and smiles] I lost my trousers one day. We were doing this scene where I’m getting manhandled by the Uruk-Hai. I was supposed to be picked up from my legs. Then my trousers came off. But you know, I don’t get embarrassed that easily. I mean I do, but it takes quite a bit. I fell over a bunch of times but I’m just like…[shrugs]
Will there be an official Dominic Monaghan website any time soon? I’m talking it out with a friend, but I kind of backed away from it for a long time. I love the rumors that are written about me.
[laughs] It’s true! [smiles]
The ones about you and Elijah? Yeah! Me and Elijah. Me and Orlando.
What is that about? I don’t know! I can’t understand it either, but I kind of enjoy it. You know, that myth around it, but now since I have new movies I want to publicize, it makes sense. So in the early part of next year I might. There have been people offering to do it but I want to do it with a friend who I can trust.
Tell us about your new movie, please. I’m working on a new film about a rock band breaking up. They are all obsessed with The Beatles and they kind of follow the story of The Beatles. They have a Yoko Ono that comes in and tries to get involved. I play a bass guitarist that’s why my hair’s all long. It will be out in March or April of next year..
What would you like to say to all of your fans? Maybe more than anything that it’s not over. That it doesn’t end with this. With ‘Lord of the Rings’, we all kind of arrived on a world scale but now we have other films going on that are going to extend. Just keep watching and keep following us.
